Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a retaining wall and a garden wall?
A retaining wall holds back a meaningful difference in grade — soil higher on one side than the other. A garden wall is decorative or partition-only, with similar grades on both sides. Retaining walls need engineered drainage; garden walls don't.
Do all retaining walls need a permit?
In most LA-area cities, walls under 4 feet of retained height don't require a permit. Walls 4 ft or taller do, and the permit triggers engineered drawings and often a geotechnical report. Some cities have stricter thresholds — we confirm at the site visit.
How long does a retaining wall last?
A properly engineered, properly drained retaining wall can last 50+ years. Walls fail within 10–15 years almost always for one of three reasons: undersized footing, missing drainage behind the wall, or wrong wall type for the soil.
