Frequently Asked Questions
How much is the rebate per square foot?
Metropolitan Water District has historically paid $2 per square foot, with LADWP and other municipal utilities sometimes layering a regional adder on top. Current rates change with drought conditions and program funding — confirm at mwdh2o.com or with your local utility before applying.
Do I have to apply before installing?
Yes — pre-inspection is required for the rebate to qualify. The lawn has to still be in place when an inspector or photo-verifies the existing condition. Tearing it out first disqualifies the application.
Can artificial turf qualify?
Generally no for the lawn-replacement rebate — qualifying replacement covers living drought plantings (California natives, low-water shrubs, climate-appropriate groundcovers). Artificial turf has its own occasional regional incentives but isn't part of the main MWD turf rebate.
